Week 2 | Session 1: Challenges in Supply Chain & Need for Segmentation
Course: Supply Chain Digitization
Context — Why This Session
Section titled “Context — Why This Session”Challenge 1 — Demand Forecasting
Section titled “Challenge 1 — Demand Forecasting”Core Problem: Accurately predicting customer requirements is extremely difficult. Inaccurate forecasting leads to one of two extreme outcomes — both harmful to SC performance.
| Outcome | Consequence |
|---|---|
| Overstocking | Excess inventory → higher inventory cost → reduced profit margins |
| Stockout | Lost sales → customer dissatisfaction → competitor gains |
Industry Example:
Digitization Solution:
| Tool / Method | Role |
|---|---|
| RFID & Real-Time Data Collection | Capture live demand signals as they occur |
| Advanced Analytics | Analyse historical data, market trends, and relevant external factors |
| Machine Learning / Predictive Analytics | Accurately forecast future demand → enable better inventory level decisions |
Challenge 2 — Inventory Management
Section titled “Challenge 2 — Inventory Management”Core Problem: Matching inventory levels closely with demand is the fundamental tension in SC management — too much or too little both carry real costs.
| Condition | Consequence |
|---|---|
| Too much inventory | High holding cost |
| Too little inventory | Stockout — lost sales, customer dissatisfaction |
Industry Examples:
Digitization Solution:
- IoT devices + RFID technology → implement digital inventory tracking systems with real-time visibility of stock levels across all locations
- Better decision-making enabled for ordering, holding, and transportation
- Data Analytics → optimise stock levels to minimise carrying cost; identify slow-moving items for separate management; flag items suitable for Just-In-Time (JIT) inventory practices
Challenge 3 — Supplier Relationship Management
Section titled “Challenge 3 — Supplier Relationship Management”Core Problem: Supply chains are fundamentally dependent on partners — especially suppliers. Concentration of dependency on a limited number of suppliers creates high disruption risk. If even one critical supplier fails, the entire SC can be disrupted.
Industry Example:
Digitization Solution:
| Tool / Method | Role |
|---|---|
| Digital platforms integrated with suppliers | Track supplier performance in real time |
| Data Analytics | Assess supplier performance, track lead times, evaluate risk factors, and digitise the entire procurement process |
| Alternative supplier base | Always maintain backup suppliers — identified and qualified before disruptions occur — to handle failures without SC interruption |
Challenge 4 — Transportation & Logistics Delays
Section titled “Challenge 4 — Transportation & Logistics Delays”Core Problem: Capacity constraints, rising transport costs, and delivery delays all directly impact SC efficiency. Many causes are external and unpredictable.
Industry Example:
Digitization Solution:
| Tool / Method | Role |
|---|---|
| GPS Tracking | Real-time shipment monitoring and large-scale data collection on movement patterns |
| Route Planning & Optimisation | Streamline operations and dynamically adjust routes to avoid delays |
| Data Analytics | Optimise routes, predict vehicle maintenance needs, and generate insights to enhance overall logistics efficiency |
Challenge 5 — Technology Integration
Section titled “Challenge 5 — Technology Integration”Core Problem: Integrating modern technologies — IoT, AI, Blockchain — into existing SC operations is complex. Compatibility issues with legacy software disrupt real-time data flow. A supply chain moves not just products, but also information — and broken information flow is as damaging as a broken physical flow.
Industry Example:
Digitization Solution:
- Digital platforms → enable seamless integration of new and existing technologies
- Data Analytics → analyse large volumes of data from integrated technologies → develop actionable insights → improve overall SC performance
Challenge 6 — Regulatory Compliance
Section titled “Challenge 6 — Regulatory Compliance”Core Problem: Complex, multi-geography SC processes must adhere to ever-changing regulatory requirements. Non-compliance leads to delayed shipments and financial penalties.
Industry Example:
Digitization Solution:
| Tool / Method | Role |
|---|---|
| Digital platforms | Automate monitoring of compliance requirements across geographies |
| Process integration | Embed relevant regulations directly into SC workflows |
| Data Analytics | Continuously monitor critical compliance parameters and trigger alerts on any deviations |
Challenge 7 — Sustainability & Environmental Concerns
Section titled “Challenge 7 — Sustainability & Environmental Concerns”Core Problem: Companies face growing pressure to meet sustainability goals across carbon emissions, waste reduction, and energy consumption. Failure to demonstrate progress leads to reputational damage and regulatory scrutiny.
Industry Example:
Digitization Solution:
- Digital platforms + IoT sensors → monitor key sustainability indicators in real time: carbon emissions, energy consumption, and waste volumes
- Data Analytics → analyse the environmental impact of SC operations
- Strategic response → use insights to design and execute plans that meet sustainability targets and demonstrate measurable progress
Challenge 8 — Cybersecurity Threats
Section titled “Challenge 8 — Cybersecurity Threats”Core Problem: As data flows across an increasingly connected SC, protecting sensitive information becomes critical. A cyber breach can cause data loss, destruction of customer trust, financial loss, and legal consequences — all simultaneously.
Industry Example:
Digitization Solution:
| Tool / Method | Role |
|---|---|
| Robust cybersecurity measures | Control and protect SC data flows and digital infrastructure |
| Data Analytics | Continuously monitor network activity and flag deviations from routine patterns |
| ML algorithms | Predict anomalies in network behaviour before they escalate into breaches |
Challenge 9 — Talent Shortage & Skills Gap
Section titled “Challenge 9 — Talent Shortage & Skills Gap”Core Problem: Finding and retaining skilled SC professionals — particularly those with analytics and digitization expertise — is increasingly difficult. A skills gap reduces an organisation’s ability to optimise operations and respond to market changes.
Industry Example:
Digitization Solution:
| Tool / Method | Role |
|---|---|
| Automation of routine tasks | Free up SC professionals from repetitive work → enable focus on strategic decision-making |
| Data Analytics | Identify specific skill gaps in the existing workforce → enable targeted, effective training programs |
